The degree to which an entity’s interests, welfare or treatment generate moral reasons or duties.
Plain-language definition
Moral status theories use different criteria and may support graduated protections under uncertainty.
The definition is intentionally bounded. It identifies the property or role under discussion without converting terminology into a claim of deployment, recognition, personhood, citizenship, sovereignty, or authority.

Legal or policy use
Current legal systems generally do not recognize Machine Intelligence as a natural person and provide no uniform machine-personhood regime.
When a statute, regulation, standard, or external institution uses a different definition, that source-specific meaning controls the analysis of that source. The project definition is not silently substituted into current law.
What the term implies
The term implies that the stated property should be evaluated using the evidence appropriate to moral status, legal personhood, threshold design, precaution, due process and institutional recognition. What the term does not imply
Moral status is not identical to legal personhood, citizenship, intelligence level or economic value.
